The Oil of Worship & Divine Presence

Frankincense is one of the most sacred oils in Scripture, used in temple worship, grain offerings, and holy incense. Its aroma was burned continually as a fragrant offering to the Lord, symbolizing prayer, purity, and devotion. Frankincense was also presented to Jesus at His birth, pointing to His role as Great High Priest.

Traditionally associated with spiritual focus and reverence, frankincense invites moments of stillness, worship, and connection. It has long been valued for its grounding, clarifying, and renewing qualities—making it a cornerstone oil for both sacred and daily life.

Myrrh

The Oil of Purification & Preparation

Myrrh appears throughout Scripture as a symbol of cleansing, consecration, and sacrificial love. Esther underwent months of preparation with myrrh before entering the king’s presence, and myrrh was a key ingredient in the holy anointing oil. It was also given to Jesus at His birth and used in burial preparations.

Biblically, myrrh represents preparation for holiness and intimacy with God. Its deep, resinous aroma reflects themes of refinement, healing, and reverence—often associated with seasons of transformation and inner strengthening.

The Oil of Humility & Holy Authority

Cassia was one of the four oils used in the holy anointing oil described in Exodus. In Psalm 45, it appears again as part of the fragrance of the Messiah’s garments—connecting cassia to kingship, consecration, and righteous authority.

The name cassia is linked to the idea of bowing low, symbolizing humility before God. Warm and spicy, cassia reflects the refining nature of the anointing—calling believers to walk in both submission and spiritual authority.

Cinnamon

The Oil of Holy Fire & Joy

Cinnamon was also included in the holy anointing oil and is associated with warmth, passion, and delight. Its sweet yet spicy aroma reflects the joy and fire of God’s presence—an anointing that empowers while also bringing pleasure and intimacy.

Biblically, cinnamon speaks to holy passion, joyful devotion, and the sweetness that flows from a life set apart. It reminds us that the anointing is not only sacred—it is life-giving and celebratory.

The Oil of Extravagant Devotion

Spikenard is one of the most emotionally powerful oils in Scripture. In Song of Solomon, it represents the fragrance of the Bride, while in John 12, Mary of Bethany pours costly spikenard on Jesus’ feet—anointing Him for burial.

Spikenard symbolizes surrender, intimacy, and costly worship. Its story reminds us that true devotion is not measured by practicality, but by love freely poured out. Biblically, it is the fragrance of a heart fully yielded.

The Oil of Strength & Stability

Cedar was used extensively in the construction of Solomon’s Temple—for the walls, ceiling, and inner structures. In Scripture, cedar represents strength, endurance, and spiritual maturity. The righteous are compared to the cedar of Lebanon—deeply rooted and unshakable.

Cedar’s rich, grounding aroma reflects themes of protection, confidence, and resilience. It is a biblical picture of a life built strong enough to host the presence of God.

The Oil of Restoration & Resilience

Cypress was used for the floors and doors of the temple, forming the foundation and entry points into holy space. Known for its durability and resistance to decay, cypress symbolizes preservation, renewal, and hope.

Scripture associates cypress with restoration in barren places, and its biblical role reflects stability during transition. Cypress represents strength in movement—supporting seasons of change, healing, and forward momentum.
